One of our exterior doors no longer aligns with all of the locks. Thanks for help. I apologize for being "home improvement" illiterate.

First thing I would check is the screws holding the hinges. Open the door and pull up on the door while holding the knob. You should not feel any play. Many original equipment screws are just barely long enough to go through the jamb and work themselves loose. If they are loose remove them one at a time and replace them with 3" number 10 screws (3' = length, #10- the diameter) Be careful not to put the jamb up to far or you will go out of wack in the other direction. Start with this to see if this is the problem.

The screws are all tight. Is it possble that the door frame is not plumb or level? This is just an uninformed thought. Thanks

Cozmo, do you have a level? Check the hinge side for plumb. Is it that you have to pick up on the door to close it?

I used the level on the hinge side and it is plumb. No, we do not have to pick up on the door to close it. There has to be a solution I hope. BTW yopauly, thanks for the help and you using your time for these problems.

Cozmo, so the door does close but does not latch? If that is the case you have to relocate the catch up or down to match the latch, natch. lol You need a chisel, awl or nail, and a utility knife. Close the door and look in the space between the door and jamb. mark with a pencil how much you need to move the catch. Remove the catch and fill the old holes with wooden toothpicks or the like and glue(to keep the screws from falling back into the old holes) Using the catch mark the jamb for material you need to remove to move the catch. Chisel and utility knife to remove material. Reinstall catch by using awl or nail to start the screw. Could this solve your problem?

Are both the deadbolt and the handle set mis-aligned the same way, (both of them below or above the catches)? Or are they different? If they are the same, check the margin around the door, (the space between the door and the door jamb). It should be the same all around. If it's not, you could also try shimming the hinges. If the lockset on the door is below the catch on the jamb, loosen the lowest hinge, and place a thin shim between the hinge and the door jamb, the retighten the hinge screws. This will raise the lockset on the door and bring it up to the catch. If it's the other way around shim the top hinge. Hope it helps

If I lean against the door, the deadbolt aligns, it is the door latch that does not align up. Thanks for all of your info. Any thing else that I should know?

Maybe it is the weather strip on the outside of the door. Do you have a strip that is attached with multiple screws around the top and both sides of the door? While you are leaning on the door have someone look at the weatherstrip to see if is deforming some places and not others. That might be out of adjustment. loosen all the screws, close the door, latch all the latches and while applying light pressure retighten the screws to form a weathertight seal around the door. If the strip is old or attached with small nails the solution would be to buy a new one and install per instructions. Good hunting, Cozmo! Paul

Is it a wood door? Is there a storm door. If it's a wood door, and it has been exposed to the elements for a consideral period of time, it may be warped.

My suggestion is try to check the screws or the material you used in that door. _________________ Bathroom fan

If the hinge side is plumb, I'd suspect the latch side has somehow changed. IF you havea good square, see if the door frame is still square. If not, then the entire wall has somehow shifted. Reinstalling the latch will cure the immediate problem, but you might want to look to see why the frame has shifted.
