Our toilet tank "cries" whenever it feels like it.  Looking into the tank shows no problem.  Sounds like air might be in the the pipes.  Ever run up against this before?

Is the tank refilling when it is crying? I would venture to guess that there is a small tear or accumulation of crud on the shut off diaphragm. Some of the newer valves can be cleaned out by removing the top cap and flushing the inner workings with some water. But really, why go through all that when a new valve is so inexpensive. I would get a rebuild kit that has the valve, flapper and chain and replace the whole mess. That is unless you like to listen to it cry. lol

Oh, rita, the Fluidmaster kit comes with incredibly detailed instructions so it is very easy.  As far as tools go, all you need is a pair of pliers, a adjustable wrench  and a utility knife. You could even find it cheaper at other home improvement stores.

If your tank "cries" when no one is flushing, I would also recommend replacing the flush valve flapper. It's attached to the handle by a chain. There are too many drop in replacements out there to mention. I happen to like the Korky brand. Available at all the DIY stores
